Delta 8 THC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that appears in nominal amounts. It is very similar to Delta 9 THC in molecular structure except for the position of its double bond. And like Delta 9 THC, Delta 8 THC is initially synthesized from CBG-A (Cannabigerolic Acid.)

This makes it a good alternative for first-time users of THC who are considering using marijuana to address their symptoms because Delta 8 THC provides very similar medicinal benefits to marijuana without the paranoia often reported when beginners use Delta-9 THC for the first time, though this is not always the case.

Part of what makes Delta 8 products so popular is the fact that users of the product can get a similar “high” as when using marijuana, but because Delta 8 is produced from hemp, there are no federal restrictions on using the product. In other words, you don’t need to have a medical marijuana card to purchase and use Delta 8 products.

It is basically legal in all 50 states with few exceptions.  There are different factors that go into how long Delta 8 can stay in the body after use, and we will explore them here.

How Long do the Effects of Delta 8 Last?

How long the effects last typically has to do with the “form factor” you are using to take Delta 8. For example, some people prefer to vape Delta 8 from a vape pen, while the more popular method is consuming gummies, but there are also Delta 8 tinctures too, so this will have an impact on how long you experience the effects for.

Inhaling Delta 8 will provide a rapid onset of effects that can hit you in as little as 2-5 minutes and last for 1-2 hours. When putting a tincture under your tongue, you can expect to feel the effects within 15-20 minutes, and the effects can last for 3-5 hours.

When you eat a gummy, it typically takes 45-90 minutes to get into your system, and then the effects can last 4-6 hours, though each person will have a different experience also based on their metabolism.

How Long will Delta 8 Stay in Your System?

How long the effects last in the body versus how long the Delta 8 cannabinoid stays in your body are two different things. The previous section discusses how long you may feel the effects of Delta 8 after ingesting or inhaling it, so how long is Delta 8 detectable in the body after consumption?

While up to 90% of Delta 8 will flush from the body typically within 5 – 7 days, it leaves behind THC metabolites that can take up to another 5-10 days to leave your system, so you are looking at a minimum of 2 weeks before it leaves your system, but you also have to factor in how often a person uses Delta 8 products and how much they consume when using them. Metabolism also plays a role in determining how long Delta 8 remains in your system.

How Long Until I can Pass a Drug Test?

You can fail a drug test if too many THC metabolites remain in your system when you take a drug test, so be sure to err on the side of caution and abstain for at least one month, if possible, prior to taking a drug test.

If you don’t have that luxury, then you may want to consider flushing it out of your system with any of the myriad of products that are available on the market to people flush THC from their system.

We discussed some of the different factors that can contribute to Delta 8 staying in the system longer than average, but all things considered, as previously stated, you should abstain for at least of month prior to taking a drug to test to be sure that you will pass it, but heavy and frequent users of Delta 8 products may need to abstain for longer.

How do I remove Delta 8 and THC Metabolites from my System?

The most common-sense way to get any type of THC out of your system is by abstaining from using any Delta 8 or Delta 9 products, in any form, for at least 2-4 weeks, though some people may require a longer period to test negative, and it will vary slightly from person to person.

Perhaps the most popular way is to buy what is known as a detox kit or flushing kit, typically in the form of a tea or a powder that you mix with water and drink down in ungodly amounts in a very short period, but they work quite well if someone has a small window in which they must flush the THC metabolites from their system.

Eating nutritious foods and getting enough exercise and hydration can also reduce the number of metabolites in the body, so being on a consistent exercise routine and eating healthy is another way to potentially cut down on the amount of time it takes for Delta 8 or other THC metabolites to be eliminated from the body.

Final Thoughts

If you know that you are scheduled to take a drug test ahead of schedule, the best thing to do is abstain from using any Delta 8 or Delta 9 THC products; however, if you do find yourself caught by surprise, and you have to take random drug test knowing that you have THC in your system, then it is best to immediately get a detox or flush kit and get going on it.

While Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC have many benefits when used responsibly, there are still not enough safety measures in place for employees who work in “zero tolerance” work environments so always use common sense when weighing out the risks vs. the benefits, and if you have any other questions about Delta 8 or any other cannabinoid or product, please contact us at info@purwell.com.
